About the Event
Coastal erosion has been a concern at St Patrick’s Chapel since the early 20th century, with regular reports of burials emerging from sand dunes. Continuing damage to the site, a Scheduled Monument, meant there was an urgent need for excavation to retrieve as much information as possible. This excavation was carried out in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2019 by Dyfed Archaeological Trust and the University of Sheffield with support from the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority and has revealed over 100 burials, dating to the 8th century to the 11th century AD. In this presentation, Ken Murphy will share the results of the excavation and what they tell us about this fascinating early Christian church and burial site.
The final season of excavation is planned over six weeks in June/July 2021.
